This course provides an introduction to the nature and form of the contemporary global governance system. It gives an overview of the forces behind the emergence of the existing frameworks of global governance, and the relationships between the global and other forms of governance at the regional and national levels

|
The course considers how globalisation processes have shaped the governance system, and the impact of the latter upon state autonomy. New forms of governance involving non-state actors and non-governmental organisations are examined, and the course considers the tensions between private and public forms of governance. Specific issues pertaining to the functioning of the global governance system will be examined, particularly democracy, accountability, reform of the global financial architecture, and the power asymmetries in the structure of the global system

The course is delivered over a total of fifteen hours, though a combination of lectures, seminars and class discussion. Students are encouraged to prepare in advance of the week's class by reading the designated material, and to actively participate in the discussions, cours donné en Anglais

The assessment of the course is based upon: (1) the preparation of a critical review of an article/chapter dealing with a selected topic from the course  The review should be no more than 2000 words; (2) a written essay of 15-20 pages, addressing one of the topics to be covered by the course and selected from a list to be issued to the class
