Historical developments in microscopy. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy, diffraction, microanalysis by X-rays, electron loss spectroscopy: applications in heterogeneous catalysis, solid state chemistry, polymer chemistry and biochemistry. Diffraction of low energy electrons at surfaces with applications in surface chemistry. Microscopy with atomic resolution: from field ion microscopy (FIM) to near-field microscopy (STM, AFM). The "atom-probe": determination of chemical composition at nano-sized surfaces while imaging chemical reactions by FIM
