Urban Sociology

Objective

Explaining the contribution of urban sociology to demonstrate and to understand the different logics sustaining the current development of European cities. Providing a set of concepts and analysis to give to students the capability to make a critical analysis of the urban development. This analysis is based on a view of a reciprocal relationship between the evolution of the city and the major social, economical and cultural changes



Contents

Relationships between city and social phenomena  Common sociological characteristics shared by de cities and their development (interactions, social heterogeneity, centrality, political dimension...)  Some notions in sociology of space  Main theoretical approaches of the city  Current development of cities: relation between social change and urban change (change of ways of life, mobility, metropolisation, impacts of globalisation, change in urban hierarchies...)
